Answer
Robert Smalls was born in 1839 in Beaufort, South Carolina. He was born into slavery and worked as a ship's pilot for his owner. In 1862, he seized the Confederate ship Planter and sailed it to the Union blockade of Charleston Harbor. This act of heroism made Smalls a national hero and he was later elected to the South Carolina state legislature and to the U.S. House of Representatives.
