Ungern von Sternberg was a Baltic German military officer who served in the Russian Empire and later the White Movement during the Russian Civil War. After the Whites were defeated, Ungern fled to Mongolia, where he was proclaimed a Mongolian general and became a close ally of the Bogd Khan, the religious leader of Mongolia.
