Nikolai Robert Maximilian Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg (; 15 January 1886 – 15 September 1921), better known as Roman von Ungern-Sternberg or the "White Baron", was a Russian Imperial Army cavalry commander, later the military leader of the Mongolian People's Republic during the Mongolian Civil War. He was known for his extreme cruelty and for his attempts to restore the monarchy in Mongolia.
