Roman von Ungern-Sternberg was a Russian baron who served as a cavalry officer in the Imperial Russian Army during the First World War. After the Russian Revolution, he joined the White movement and fought against the Bolsheviks. He eventually became the leader of a White army in Mongolia, where he proclaimed himself the Bogd Khaan, the spiritual leader of the Mongolian people.
