Ungern was a Russian Imperial Army officer who defected to the Bolsheviks in 1918, but later turned against them and became an independent warlord. He played a role in the Mongolian Civil War, interfering in Mongolia against China. He also tried to restore the Bogd Khanate in Mongolia, but was unsuccessful. He was eventually captured and executed by the Red Army in 1921.
