Ungern was captured by the Red Army two months after travelling to Eastern Siberia. He had been attempting to recruit troops to fight the Soviets and had been successful in enlisting a small force of about 1,000 men. However, he was outnumbered and outgunned by the Red Army and was forced to surrender. He was subsequently executed by the Soviets.
