Raised in Continental Europe, James Francis Edward, the "Old Pretender" to the British throne, was the son of the deposed King James II of England and VII of Scotland and his second wife, Mary of Modena. He was born on June 10, 1688, in London but was taken to France with his parents during the Glorious Revolution.
