Kufa was a garrison town in Mesopotamia (Iraq) that was built by Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas. The town was founded in 638 AD as a military base for the Arab armies that had conquered the region. Kufa quickly grew into a major city and became a center of trade and culture. The city was also the site of the first major mosque in Iraq.
