Sally Ride joined NASA in 1978. She was one of the first six women to be selected for the astronaut training program. Ride went on to become the first American woman to travel to space, when she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983. She flew on two more Space Shuttle missions before retiring from NASA in 1987.
