Samuel Griffith first became Premier of Queensland in 1883, the year after Queensland was separated from New South Wales. He was a prominent lawyer and politician who had previously served as Attorney-General of Queensland. He led the Queensland Liberal Party and was responsible for introducing a number of reforms, including the establishment of a public health system and the introduction of compulsory education.
