Sigismund II Augustus belonged to the Jagiellonian dynasty, a royal house that ruled Poland and Lithuania from the 14th to the 16th centuries. The dynasty was founded by Władysław II Jagiełło, who became King of Poland in 1386 and Grand Duke of Lithuania in 1377.
