In 1989, Mikis Theodorakis ran as an independent candidate within the New Democracy party. This was after he had previously been a member of the Greek Socialist Party (PASOK). Theodorakis was a popular figure in Greece and his candidacy attracted a lot of attention. However, he was ultimately defeated by the incumbent prime minister, Konstantinos Mitsotakis.
