Who imposed direct rule on Mercia after Ælfwynn?

  • Æthelred

  • Æthelflæd

  • Edward the Elder

  • William of Malmesbury

Answer

Edward the Elder, the son of Alfred the Great, imposed direct rule on Mercia after Ælfwynn, his sister, had been forced to abdicate. This was because Edward was concerned that the Mercians might try to revolt against him and re-establish their own kingdom. Edward therefore installed his own officials in Mercia and made sure that they were loyal to him.
