Pope Damasus II was born in Bavaria, Germany. He was the first German pope and served from December 16, 1048 to July 9, 1049. He was a Benedictine monk and prior of the monastery of St. Paul's Outside the Walls in Rome. He was elected pope after the death of Pope Clement II. His papacy was brief and he died of malaria in July 1049.
