Benyoucef Benkhedda was the first president of Algeria from 1962 to 1965. He was a leading member of the National Liberation Front (FLN) and was instrumental in the Algerian War of Independence. After independence, Benkhedda was elected president by the National Constituent Assembly. However, he was overthrown in a coup d'état in 1965 by Houari Boumedienne. Benkhedda continued to be active in politics until his death in 2010.
