Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616) was the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. A brilliant military leader and politician, Ieyasu was able to unify Japan after years of civil war and establish a stable and prosperous government. Under his rule, Japan experienced a period of peace and economic growth known as the Edo period.
