Toole ended his life in Biloxi, Mississippi, a coastal city in the southern United States. He had been struggling with depression and alcoholism for many years, and his death was ruled a suicide. Toole's novel "A Confederacy of Dunces" was published posthumously and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981.
