Mullah Omar was a Pashtun who became a leader of the Taliban. He was born in 1959 in the village of Sangsar, Afghanistan. Omar was a religious scholar and a mujahideen fighter in the Soviet-Afghan War. He is believed to have joined the Taliban in 1994. The Taliban gained control of Kabul in 1996 and ruled Afghanistan until 2001. Omar was killed in a US airstrike in 2013.
