Tabaré Vázquez was a physician and politician who served as President of Uruguay from 2005 to 2010 and from 2015 to 2020. He was the first leftist president of Uruguay and the first openly gay president of any Latin American country. Vázquez was a medical doctor who specialized in urology and nephrology. He was also a professor at the University of the Republic of Uruguay.
