Wilhelm Pieck was the chairman of the Socialist Unity Party, which was the ruling communist party of East Germany. The party was formed in 1946 by the merger of the Communist Party of Germany and the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Pieck served as chairman of the party until his death in 1960.
