Lieutenant William Robert Broughton of the Royal Navy led a British expedition through the Pacific Ocean in the early 1790s. His voyage explored much of the coast of New Guinea, and he also discovered the island of Vanuatu and several other islands. Broughton was also the first European to sail into the Torres Strait.
