At the age of 13, Xuanzang was ordained as a novice monk in the Shaolin Temple. He began his studies of the Buddhist scriptures and philosophy. In 629, he left Shaolin and began his journey to India, where he spent the next 17 years studying at various Buddhist monasteries. He returned to China in 645 with a vast collection of Buddhist scriptures and relics, which he translated into Chinese.
