Yitzhak Rabin died in 1995 after being assassinated by a right-wing Jewish extremist, Yigal Amir. Rabin had been prime minister of Israel from 1974 to 1977 and from 1992 to 1995. He was a leading figure in the Israeli peace movement and had been instrumental in negotiating the Oslo Accords with the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO).
