Golda Meir appointed Rabin as ambassador to the United States in 1968. He served in this role until 1973, when he returned to Israel to become defense minister. As ambassador, Rabin worked to improve relations between Israel and the United States. He also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Camp David Accords.
