He was an American businessman, plantation owner, slave owner, and diplomat who is best known for his advocacy of racial equality and his relationship with Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley. Kingsley was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and was educated at Yale University. He moved to Florida in 1793 and began a career in business and politics.
