The People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) was a communist political party in Afghanistan. It was formed in 1965 by a split from the Afghan National Front. The PDPA was led by Nur Muhammad Taraki and Babrak Karmal. In 1978, the PDPA seized power in a coup d'état. Karmal became Deputy Chairman of the Revolutionary Council.
