The Saur Revolution was a coup d'état that overthrew the Daoud Khan government in Afghanistan in April 1978. The revolution was led by the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA), a Marxist–Leninist political party, and was supported by the Soviet Union. Karmal was one of the leaders of the PDPA and played a key role in the revolution.
