Constance Markievicz was a leader of the Easter Rising, a rebellion against British rule in Ireland that took place in 1916. She was one of the few women to participate in the uprising, and she was one of the seven signatories of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, which was read out at the start of the rebellion.
