Garret FitzGerald was the Fine Gael leader to win a general election before Enda Kenny. He was a member of the Irish Parliament from 1969 to 1992, and Taoiseach from 1981 to 1982 and 1982 to 1987. FitzGerald was a leading figure in the liberal wing of Fine Gael, and his governments introduced a number of significant reforms, including the abolition of capital punishment and the introduction of divorce.
