Horace Smith-Dorrien was born on 26 May 1858 in Woolwich, London. He was a British Army officer and military theorist. He fought in the Second Boer War and the First World War. In the First World War, he commanded the II Corps during the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Passchendaele. He retired from the Army in 1923.
