Sixteen B-25 Mitchell bombers took off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet for Operation Vengeance on April 18, 1942. The planes, led by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, carried out the first air raid on Tokyo. The raid was a success, but the planes were not able to return to the Hornet and were forced to land in China.
