Laurent-Désiré Kabila was the first president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, serving from 1997 to 2001. He was a revolutionary leader who came to power after leading a rebel army that overthrew the government of Mobutu Sese Seko. Kabila was assassinated in 2001 by his bodyguard, and was succeeded by his son, Joseph Kabila.
