Michael D. Higgins served twice as a senator for the National University of Ireland, Galway, where he had also served as a lecturer. He was first elected to the Senate in 1977 and served until 1982, when he was elected to Dáil Éireann. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1987 and served until 1992, when he was elected President of Ireland.
