Answer
John Garang led the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) before Salva Kiir Mayardit. Garang, a charismatic leader and former military officer, founded the SPLM in 1983 to fight for the rights of southern Sudan against the government in Khartoum. Under Garang's leadership, the SPLM waged a decades-long civil war against the Sudanese government, which ended with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005.
