In 1682, Ivan V became the co-Tsar of Russia alongside his half-brother Peter the Great, following the death of their elder brother Feodor III. As Ivan was deemed physically and mentally unfit to rule, Peter assumed most of the governing responsibilities, effectively making him the de facto ruler. Ivan V remained the titular co-Tsar until his death in 1696, at the age of 30.
