The Socialist Unity Party (SED) was a political party in East Germany. It was founded in 1946 by the merger of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). Pieck was a key figure in the SED, and served as its leader from 1946 to 1954. He was also the first President of East Germany from 1949 to 1960.
