Wilhelm Frederick Reinhold Pieck was a German communist politician who served as the first President of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) from 1949 to 1960. He was a founding member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in 1918 and served as its chairman from 1925 to 1933. During the Nazi era, Pieck was imprisoned in a concentration camp from 1933 to 1945.
