Babrak Karmal was the General Secretary of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan from 1979 to 1986. He was a Soviet-backed leader who came to power after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Karmal was a member of the Parcham faction of the PDPA, which was more moderate than the Khalq faction.
