During the Red Scare of the 1920s, the American government feared the rise of Communism and persecuted its advocates. Larkin served time in Sing Sing, a New York state prison, after being convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the government. He was one of the 200 men arrested in 1920 in what became known as the Palmer Raids, a series of raids on suspected Communists and anarchists.
